Evergreen State College Library Roof Strengthening
Olympia, WA | Architect: KMB Education Facilities Group | Completion Date: 2003
Quantum provided structural engineering design for the reinforcement of the Evergreen State College Library roof, which included strengthening of the existing roof cantilevers. The existing roof, constructed in 1969, is a concrete waffle slab with perimeter cantilevers over 14 feet in plan. Over time the roof structure cracked and settled, resulting in noticeable sagging at the cantilevered tips. Quantum explored several reinforcement options including steel outriggers, precast braces, and post-tensioned tendons. Fiberwrap reinforcement was selected as the preferred option that best met the client’s needs while maintaining the existing exposed concrete architecture of the campus. The fiberwrap installation occurred concurrently with a reroofing project and was installed on schedule during the wet winter and spring construction timetable.
